On election day, November 7, 1972,Republican nomineeEugene Bookhammer won re-election by a margin of 8,017 votes against his foremost opponentDemocratic nominee Clifford B. Hearn, thereby retaining Republican control over the office of lieutenant governor. Bookhammer was sworn in for his second term on January 16, 1973.[2]
