Margaret Court defeatedBillie Jean King in the final, 14–12, 11–9 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the1970 Wimbledon Championships. It was her thirdWimbledon singles title and 19thmajor singles title overall. Court was the first woman to complete thecareer Grand Slam in theOpen Era, and would win the1970 US Open to become the first woman in the Open Era to complete theGrand Slam.^[1]

Ann Jones was the reigning champion, but she had retired from major singles competition.^[2]
