1969 Leeds City Council election

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Local election in the United Kingdom

The1969Leeds municipal election was held on 8 May 1969,[1] with one third of the councillors up for election. TheConservative incumbent inArmley had defected toIndependent Conservative in the interim and hoped to defend it as such.[2]

In contrast to their performance nationally,[1] the Tories fell back upon their peak theprevious year, with Labour managing to stabilise their support somewhat. The sole beneficiary (unlike last year, theCommunists dropped back to their normal support) were theLiberals, who obtained their largest vote since1963. In total three seats changed hands, with a spectacular gain in WestHunslet by the Liberals from the Conservatives, another loss of the latter's to Labour inOsmondthorpe, offset a little by a comfortable win back in Armley from their former incumbent.[2]
