Rod Laver defeatedAndrés Gimeno in the final, 6–3, 6–4, 7–5 to win the men's singles tennis title at the1969 Australian Open. It was his eighthGrand Slam tournament singles title, and the first step in an eventualGrand Slam for Laver. This was the first edition of theAustralian Open to be open to professional players, marking a period in tennis history known as theOpen Era.

Bill Bowrey was the defending champion, but lost in the quarterfinals toRay Ruffels.
