The1968 United States presidential election in Maryland was held on November 5, 1968, as part of the1968 United States presidential election.Maryland was won byHubert Humphrey by a margin of 20,315 votes againstRichard Nixon and by 359,576 votes againstGeorge Wallace.[1]

Maryland was the home state of Republican vice presidential nomineeSpiro Agnew, who was the sittingGovernor of Maryland at the time of the election. Since Nixon lost his home state of New York, this, along with the1916 election, is one of two times where the winning presidential and vice-presidential candidates lost both of their home states.

This is one of three elections between 1888 and 2000 in which the state voted for the national loser, along with 1948 and 1980. This was George Wallace's strongest state in which he won no counties, though he did finish ahead of Humphrey inDorchester County.

In this election, Maryland voted 2.34% to the left of the nation at-large.[2] As of 2026, this is the last election in which the winning candidate lost the home state of their running mate.

Notes

[edit]
  1. ^Although he was born in California and he served as a U.S. Senator from California, in 1968 Richard Nixon’s official state of residence was New York, because he moved there to practice law after his defeat in the 1962 California gubernatorial election. During his first term as president, Nixon re-established his residency in California. Consequently, most reliable reference books list Nixon's home state as New York in the 1968 election and his home state as California in the 1972 (and 1960) election.
  2. ^abThoughCurtis LeMay was Wallace's official running mate, Griffin's name was on the Maryland ballot.
  3. ^In this county where Wallace ran second ahead of Humphrey, margin given is Nixon vote minus Wallace vote and percentage margin Nixon percentage minus Wallace percentage.
