Manchester United won the First Division title for the seventh time in the club's history that season. They made sure of that on 6 May, after beatingWest Ham United 6–1 at Upton Park whilst their title challengersNottingham Forest lost 2–1 atSouthampton. This was their last league title for 26 years, and last in the First Division, until the inaugural1992-93 Premier League season.Blackpool were relegated on 15 April, after losing 2–0 atStoke City whilstAston Villa joined them on 6 May, after losing 4–2 at home againstEverton with Southampton's win against Nottingham Forest confirming their relegation.
