Elections in New Mexico

The1964 United States presidential election in New Mexico took place on November 3, 1964. All fifty states andThe District of Columbia, were part of the1964 United States presidential election. State voters chose four electors to represent them in theElectoral College, who voted forpresident andvice president.

New Mexico was won byPresidentLyndon B. Johnson in a 19-point landslide. Johnson had won after serving as President for one year following theAssassination of John F. Kennedy. Arizona SenatorBarry Goldwater lost most of the United States in this election, except for his home state and portions of theAmerican South.[1] Goldwater won only three counties: thePlains counties ofUnion andHarding, which as of the2024 presidential election[update] have never voted Democratic since1948,[2] andLincoln County, which has never voted Democratic since1936. Even in these, Goldwater won only narrowly: his highest proportion of the vote was only 52.55 percent in Lincoln County. Four other normally reliably Republican counties –San Juan,Curry,Chaves andCatron – were narrowly won by Johnson and have never voted for a Democrat since.[2] This is also the last time the southeastern counties ofRoosevelt,Otero andLea have voted Democratic.Los Alamos County did not vote Democratic again until 2008.[2]

At the other extreme,Grant andSandoval Counties both gave Johnson over seventy percent of the vote, and the populous counties of Santa Fe and Taos also gave him over two-thirds.[1]
