Regular season

[edit]

The Indians season was marked by change. Longtime Indians managerAl López took over as manager of theChicago White Sox, and was replaced byKerby Farrell, who had led theIndianapolis Indians to the 1956Junior World Series crown.[1]Eddie Stanky also became the Indians new infield coach.

RookieRoger Maris, who was part of Farrell's Indianapolis team, joined the Indians as the team's starting center fielder. He made his major league debut against theChicago White Sox on April 16. In 5at bats, Maris had 3 hits.[2] Two days later, Maris hit the first home run of his career, agrand slam off Tigers pitcherJack Crimian atBriggs Stadium in Detroit.[3]

In grimmer news, on May 7Gil McDougald of the Yankees hit a pitch off Indians pitcherHerb Score in the first inning. The pitch would strike Score in the face.[4]
