The1956 United States presidential election in West Virginia took place on November 6, 1956, as part of the1956 United States presidential election. West Virginia voters chose eight[3] representatives, or electors, to theElectoral College, who voted forpresident andvice president.

West Virginia was won byincumbent PresidentDwight D. Eisenhower (RPennsylvania), running with Vice PresidentRichard Nixon, with 54.08 percent of the popular vote, againstAdlai Stevenson (DIllinois), running withSenatorEstes Kefauver, with 45.92 percent of the popular vote.[4][5] Along with Kentucky and Louisiana, West Virginia was one of three states that Dwight Eisenhower lost in 1952, but managed to flip in 1956. This was the last time West Virginia voted for a Republican presidential candidate until Eisenhower's vice president,Richard Nixon, won the state in his re-election bid in1972.

  1. ^Although he was born in Texas and grew up in Kansas before his military career, at the time of the 1952 election Eisenhower was president ofColumbia University and was, officially, a resident of New York. During his first term as president, he moved his private residence toGettysburg, Pennsylvania, and officially changed his residency to Pennsylvania.
