The1956 United States presidential election in Illinois took place on November 6, 1956, as part of the1956 United States presidential election. State voters chose 27[3] representatives, or electors, to theElectoral College, who voted forpresident andvice president.

Illinois was won byincumbent PresidentDwight D. Eisenhower (RPennsylvania), running with Vice PresidentRichard Nixon, with 59.52% of the popular vote, againstAdlai Stevenson (DIllinois), running withSenatorEstes Kefauver, with 40.29% of the popular vote.[4][5]

As of2024, this is the most recent time that a Democratic candidate did not earn at least 1 million votes fromCook County, by far the state's most populous county and home toChicago, in a presidential election.

The primaries and general elections coincided with those for other federal offices (Senate andHouse), as well asthose for state offices.[6]

Turnout in the state-run primary elections (Democratic and Republican) was 31.69% with a total of 1,577,163 votes cast.[6][7]

Turnout during the general election was 84.47%, with 4,407,407 votes cast.[6][8]Both major parties held non-binding state-run preferential primaries on April 10.[6]

The1956 Illinois Democratic presidential primary was held on April 10, 1956, in the U.S. state ofIllinois as one of theDemocratic Party's state primaries ahead of the 1956 presidential election.

The popular vote was a non-binding "beauty contest". Delegates were instead elected by direct votes by congressional district on delegate candidates.[6]

All candidates besidesAdlai Stevenson II, who won a landslide victory, werewrite-ins.[6][9]

The1956 Illinois Republican presidential primary was held on April 10, 1956, in the U.S. state ofIllinois as one of theRepublican Party's state primaries ahead of the 1956 presidential election.

The preference vote was a "beauty contest". Delegates were instead selected by direct-vote in each congressional districts on delegate candidates.[6]

  1. ^Although he was born in Texas and grew up in Kansas before his military career, at the time of the 1952 election Eisenhower was president ofColumbia University and was, officially, a resident of New York. During his first term as president, he moved his private residence toGettysburg, Pennsylvania, and officially changed his residency to Pennsylvania.
