Led by first-year head coachSam Boyd, the Bears compiled an overall record of 9–2 with a mark of 4–2 in conference play, placing third in the SWC. Baylor was invited to theSugar Bowl, where the Bears defeatedTennessee. The team played home games atBaylor Stadium inWaco, Texas.

GuardBill Glass was a consensus selection to theCollege Football All-America Team. Glass, halfbackDel Shofner and end Jerry Marcontell were selected to theAll-Southwest Conference team.[1]
