The1950Scottish League Cup final was played on 28 October 1950, atHampden Park in Glasgow and was the final of the fifth Scottish League Cup competition. The final was contested byHibernian andMotherwell. Motherwell won the match 3–0 thanks to goals byJim Forrest,Archie Kelly and Willie Watters.
Hibs had been2/5 favourites to win the match and fielded seven full internationals in their side.[1] This match was played during Hibs' most successful era, as they went on towin the league championship by ten clear points, led bythe Famous Five forward line ofSmith,Johnstone,Reilly,Turnbull andOrmond. They suffered a blow in the build-up to the final, however, asEddie Turnbull was injured.[1] ManagerHugh Shaw movedWillie Ormond from theleft wing toinside left, and selectedJimmy Bradley in Ormond's normal position.[1] Bradley, who never played in a league match for Hibs,[2] froze on the big occasion.[1]
Hibs controlled most of the match, but without threatening the Motherwell goal much,[1] prompting one journalist to report that:[1]
if theIbrox defence is theIron Curtain then this Motherwell defence is compressed steel.
In the 74th minute,Tommy Younger could only parry a shot byArchie Kelly, who headed in the rebound to score the opening goal.[1] Two minutes later, a deep cross byArchie Shaw was headed back across by Willie Watters, andForrest headed in Motherwell's second goal.[1] The third goal came when Younger miskicked a clearance into the path of Watters, who lobbed the Hibs' keeper.[1] Younger had to be consoled by hisopposite number after the game, while the Motherwell players celebrated their victory.[1]
