1949 in sports

TheCalgary Stampeders had an opportunity to defend theirGrey Cup title in 1949, but theMontreal Alouettes returned the trophy toQuebec for just the third time in its history.[1]

TheEdmonton Eskimos rejoined with theWIFU and adopted the colours ofgold andgreen. The WIFU regular season was extended to 14 games, per team.

Wearing helmets became compulsory with the two unions. TheWestern Canada Rugby Football Union ceased its operations.
