The1947State of the Union Address was given byHarry S. Truman, the 33rd president of the United States, on Monday, January 6, 1947, to the80th United States Congress in the chamber of theUnited States House of Representatives.[1] It was Truman's secondState of the Union Address; however, it was his first State of the Union Address to be delivered as a speech to ajoint session of the United States Congress. Presiding over this joint session wasHouse speakerJoseph W. Martin Jr., accompanied bySenate president pro temporeArthur Vandenberg.

This was the first State of the Union Address to be televised.[1][2] Three days earlier, on January 3, the first live television broadcast from the House Chamber occurred during the opening session of the 80th Congress. Truman watched this broadcast on a special 10-inch television set installed in theOval Office in preparation for his State of the Union Address which was also to be televised.[3]
