First-seededAlice Marble defeated second-seededHelen Jacobs 6–2, 6–3 in the final to win the women's singles tennis title at the1940 U.S. National Championships. The tournament was played on outdoorgrass courts and held from September 2, through September 7, 1940 at theWest Side Tennis Club inForest Hills, Queens, New York.[1] Marble won the tournament without losing a set.[2][3][4]
