The vacancy was created when incumbent SenatorA. Harry Moore resigned to become Governor of New Jersey. Interim appointeeJohn Gerald Milton did not run in the election.

FormerRepublican U.S. SenatorWilliam Warren Barbour returned to the Senate after defeatingDemocrat William H. J. Ely, the state administrator of theWorks Progress Administration.
