The1938 Arkansas gubernatorial election was held on 8 November 1938, in order to elect theGovernor of Arkansas. IncumbentDemocraticGovernor of ArkansasCarl E. Bailey defeatedRepublican nominee Charles F. Cole.[1]

Democratic primary

The Democraticprimary election was held on 9 August 1938. AsCarl E. Bailey received a majority of the votes (51.47%), arun-off was unnecessary.

After his primary loss, Walter S. McNutt ran in thegeneral election as anindependent.

General election

On election day, 8 November 1938,Democratic nomineeCarl E. Bailey won re-election by a margin of 106,619 votes against his foremost opponentRepublican nominee Charles F. Cole, thereby retaining Democratic control over the office of Governor. Bailey was sworn in for his second term on 14 January 1939.[3]
