The election featured incumbent GovernorRobert L. Cochran, aDemocrat, who defeated theRepublican nominee, newspaper publisher and former state legislatorDwight Griswold, to win a second two-year term in office.

Former State Attorney General Ora S. Spillman unsuccessfully ran for the Republican nomination.
