Elections for the members of theFirst National Assembly were held on September 16, 1935, pursuant to theTydings–McDuffie Act, which established theCommonwealth of the Philippines. The leaders of the rulingNacionalista Party,Manuel Quezon andSergio Osmeña reconciled and becamerunning mates in thepresidential election but their supporters, the Democraticos and the Democrata Pro-Independencias respectively, effectively were two separate parties at theNational Assembly elections.
With theSenate abolished, the National Assembly became aunicameral legislature.
