The1934 United States Senate special election in Tennessee took place on November 6, 1934, concurrently withother elections to the United States Senate as well as elections to theUnited States House of Representatives and various state and local elections. Thespecial election was held because incumbentDemocratic SenatorCordell Hull resigned to accept the appointment ofPresidentFranklin D. Roosevelt to the office ofSecretary of State.[1]
DemocraticGovernorHill McAlister appointedNathan L. Bachman to finish the Hull's unexpired senate term. Bachman ran for a full term in the special election and won with 80.1% of the vote defeatingIndependent candidateJohn Randolph Neal Jr.[2]
