The1928 United States presidential election in West Virginia took place on November 6, 1928, as part of the1928 United States presidential election which was held throughout all contemporary 48 states. Voters chose eight representatives, or electors to theElectoral College, who voted forpresident andvice president.
West Virginia voted for theRepublican nominee, formerSecretary of CommerceHerbert Hoover ofCalifornia, over theDemocratic nominee,GovernorAlfred E. Smith ofNew York. Hoover's running mate wasSenate Majority LeaderCharles Curtis ofKansas, while Smith ran withSenatorJoseph Taylor Robinson ofArkansas.
Hoover won the state by a margin of 17.39 percent; historians have attributed this margin toAppalachiananti-Catholicism against New Yorker Smith.[1] This was the last time that a non-incumbent Republican won West Virginia until2000. Hoover was the only Republican to carryLogan County untilJohn McCainin 2008, the first-ever Republican victor inWetzel County, the first Republican sinceUlysses S. Grantin 1868 to carryGreenbrier County, and the first Republican sinceAbraham Lincolnin 1864 to carryWayne County.[2]
