1923 Osiris, provisional designation4011 P-L, is a darkasteroid from the inner regions of theasteroid belt, approximately 13 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 24 September 1960, byIngrid andCornelis Johannes van Houten atLeiden, on photographic plates taken byTom Gehrels atPalomar Observatory in the United States.[4][6] It was named after the Egyptian godOsiris.[3]

Orbit and classification

[edit]

Osiris orbits the Sun in theinner main-belt at a distance of 2.3–2.6 AU once every 3 years and 10 months (1,388 days). Its orbit has aneccentricity of 0.06 and aninclination of 5° with respect to theecliptic.[1] Due to aprecovery taken at the discovering observatory in 1953, the body'sobservation arc is extended by 7 years prior to its official discovery observation.[4]

Palomar–Leiden survey

[edit]

The designationP–L stands forPalomar–Leiden, named afterPalomar Observatory andLeiden Observatory, which collaborated on the fruitfulPalomar–Leiden survey in the 1960s. Gehrels used Palomar'sSamuel Oschin telescope (also known as the 48-inch Schmidt Telescope), and shipped the photographic plates to Ingrid and Cornelis Johannes van Houten at Leiden Observatory. The trio are credited with several thousand asteroid discoveries.

Physical characteristics

[edit]

In theSMASS classification,Osiris is a carbonaceousC-type asteroid.[1]

According to the survey carried out by NASA'sWide-field Infrared Survey Explorer with its subsequentNEOWISE mission,Osiris measures 13.461 kilometers in diameter and its surface has a lowalbedo of 0.031.[5] As of 2017, no rotational lightcurve has been obtained.[7]

Naming

[edit]

Thisminor planet was named afterOsiris, the Egyptian god of vegetation, of the waxing and waning Moon and of the annual flooding of the Nile.[3] The official naming citation was published by theMinor Planet Center on 1 November 1979 (M.P.C. 5013).[8]
