The1916 United States presidential election in New Hampshire took place onNovember7,1916, as part of the1916 United States presidential election which was held throughout all contemporary 48 states. Voters chose four representatives, or electors to theElectoral College, who voted forpresident andvice president.
New Hampshire was won by theDemocratic nominees, incumbent DemocraticPresidentWoodrow Wilson andVice PresidentThomas R. Marshall. They defeatedRepublican nominee,U.S. Supreme Court JusticeCharles Evans Hughes ofNew York, and his running mateSenatorCharles W. Fairbanks ofIndiana.
Wilson won New Hampshire by a very narrow margin of just 0.06283% (one vote in 1,592) and 56 popular votes. In terms of popular vote margin, this isthe third-closest state presidential election race on record, behind two inMaryland from1832 and1904. In terms of percentage, it stands as the ninth-closest behind the two Maryland elections above, two fromCalifornia in1892 and1912,Kentucky in1896,Hawaii’s inaugural1960 election, and the2000 Florida andNew Mexico elections. This is the only presidential election in which New Hampshire voted Democratic while a number ofmodern-day Democratic-leaning states voted Republican. These states include the fellowNew England states ofMassachusetts,Rhode Island, andConnecticut, as well asNew York,New Jersey,Delaware,Minnesota,Illinois, andOregon. It was also the only election in which New Hampshire voted Democratic whilePennsylvania voted Republican until2016.
The giantRexall drugstore chain made an earlyopinion poll that predicted Wilson’s narrow victory in New Hampshire and in California almost perfectly,[1] leading to a reputation for accuracy that was to be lost twenty years subsequently.
This was the first time since1852 thatSullivan County voted for a Democratic presidential candidate.[2]
