1 June –Colin Blythe ofKent takes 17 wickets for 48 runs againstNorthamptonshire atNorthampton in one day. It is the best analysis ever recorded for a county cricket match (or for a single day's bowling), and not bettered infirst-class cricket until almost half a century later in 1956.

13 July – TheEdward Medal instituted to recognise acts of bravery by miners and quarrymen in endangering their lives to rescue fellow workers in accidents[7] (extended 1909 to cover other industries).

27 August – Education (Administrative Provisions) Act extends powers of local education authorities in England and Wales in relation to scholarships forgrammar schools (the 'free place' system), the provision of holiday activities and medical inspections of elementary school children.[9]

10 December –Rudyard Kipling wins theNobel Prize in Literature "in consideration of the power of observation, originality of imagination, virility of ideas and remarkable talent for narration which characterize the creations of this world-famous author".[14]
