The tournament ran from 13 July until 21 July.[1] It was the 20th staging of theWimbledon Championships, and the firstGrand Slam tennis event of 1896.[2] The number of entries for the men's singles competition was 31, the highest since 1881.[2]Harold Mahony andCharlotte Cooper won the singles titles.[3] TheAll England Plate was introduced for players who had lost in the first or second round of the singles.[2]
