The1895 United States Senate special election in California was held on January 23, 1895, by theCalifornia State Legislature to elect aU.S. Senator (Class 3) to represent the State ofCalifornia in theUnited States Senate. Incumbent Republican SenatorGeorge Clement Perkins, who was appointed by GovernorHenry Markham to fill the vacancy caused by the death of SenatorLeland Stanford in 1893, was re-elected to a full term in office, defeating newspaper publisher and fellow RepublicanM. H. de Young, Democratic former Lieutenant GovernorJohn Daggett, and several other minor challengers.[1]
