IncumbentRepublicanGovernorJoseph W. Fifer was defeated byDemocratic nomineeJohn Peter Altgeld who won 48.74% of the vote. Altgeld was the first Democratic Governor of Illinois elected since1852, before the foundation of the Republican Party.
