Candidates included four-term former state assemblymanTheodore Roosevelt, authorHenry George, and five-term U.S. RepresentativeAbram Hewitt.[1] Roosevelt, at age 28,[1] would have been the youngest mayor in New York City history had he been elected.[2][3]
The election saw many Republican voters swing their support to Hewitt.[1][4]
Daniel De Leon, the future leader of theSocialist Labor Party of America, campaigned for George.[5]
