IncumbentRepublicanGovernorShelby Moore Cullom defeatedDemocratic nomineeLyman Trumbull who won 50.56% of the vote. Cullom's victory was the seventh consecutive victory for the Republican Party.

RepublicanJohn Marshall Hamilton was electedLieutenant Governor of Illinois. At this time in Illinois history, the Lieutenant Governor was elected on a separate ballot from the governor. This would remain so until the 1970 constitution.

  1. ^Some sources[7][8] attribute 1,856 votes to a candidate called Belchadsky. This appears to be J. B. Belohradsky, who won 1,856 votes running for Lieutenant Governor.
