The1873 United States Senate special election in California was held on December 23, 1873, by theCalifornia State Legislature to elect aU.S. Senator (Class 1) to represent the State ofCalifornia in theUnited States Senate. In a special joint session, Democratic State SenatorJohn S. Hager was elected over People's Independent State SenatorThomas H. Laine, former Republican State Supreme Court JusticeOscar L. Shafter, and former Republican U.S. SenatorCornelius Cole.[1]
