State voters chose six representatives, or electors, to theElectoral College, who voted forpresident andvice president. As was standard at the time, voters chose electors directly rather than simply voting for their party's candidate.

California voted for theRepublicanincumbent,Ulysses S. Grant, over theLiberal Republican nominee,New York Tribune publisherHorace Greeley.
