Martin & Chamberlain begin their partnership inBirmingham, England.
December 8 – TheClifton Suspension Bridge inBristol, England, designed byIsambard Kingdom Brunel in1831 and completed as a memorial to him byWilliam Henry Barlow andJohn Hawkshaw, is opened to traffic. For the occasion, it is lit bymagnesium flares but they are blown out by the wind.^[1]
