The1862 North Carolina gubernatorial election was held on 7 August 1862 in order to elect theGovernor of North Carolina. This was the first election held following North Carolina'ssecession from theUnion and joining theConfederate States of America on 20 May 1861.
Conservative former member of theU.S. House of Representatives fromNorth Carolina's 8th districtZebulon Vance defeated William J. Johnston.[1]
On election day, 7 August 1862,Zebulon Vance won the election by a margin of 34,469 votes against his opponent William J. Johnston, thereby gaining the office of Governor. Vance was sworn in as the 37thGovernor of North Carolina on 8 September 1862.[2]
