The1857 United States Senate election in California was held on January 10, 1857, by theCalifornia State Legislature to elect aU.S. Senator (Class 1) to represent the State ofCalifornia in theUnited States Senate. In a special joint session, former Democratic lieutenant governorDavid C. Broderick was elected over Know Nothing State SenatorJames W. Coffroth and Republican former congressman from North CarolinaEdward Stanly.[1]
