The1856 Illinois lieutenant gubernatorial election was held on 4 November 1856 in order to elect thelieutenant governor of Illinois.Republican nominee and former member of theIllinois SenateJohn Wood defeatedDemocratic nominee Richard Jones Hamilton andKnow Nothing nominee Parmenus Bond.
On election day, 4 November 1856,Republican nomineeJohn Wood won the election by a margin of 4,287 votes against his foremost opponentDemocratic nominee Richard Jones Hamilton, thereby gaining Republican control over the office of lieutenant governor. Wood was sworn in as the 13thlieutenant governor of Illinois on 3 January 1857.[1]
