General election

On election day, August 2, 1855, incumbentDemocratic governorAndrew Johnson won re-election by a margin of 2,157 votes against hisWhig opponentMeredith Poindexter Gentry, thereby retaining Democratic control over the office of governor. Johnson was sworn in for his second term on October 17, 1855.[3][4]
