The1854 Maine gubernatorial election was held on 11 September 1854 in order to elect theGovernor of Maine.Know Nothing nomineeAnson Morrill defeatedDemocratic nominee and former GovernorAlbion Parris,Whig nominee and former member of theU.S. House of Representatives fromMaine's 4th districtIsaac Reed andLiberty Party nominee and former member of theU.S. House of Representatives fromMaine's 4th districtShepard Cary. However, as no candidate received a majority of the total votes cast as was required by Maine law, the election was forwarded to theMaine legislature, who chose Morrill as governor.[1]
On election day, 11 September 1854,Know Nothing nomineeAnson Morrill won the election by a margin of 16,103 votes against his foremost opponentDemocratic nominee and former GovernorAlbion Parris, thereby gainingKnow Nothing control over the office of governor. Morrill was sworn in as the 24thGovernor of Maine on 3 January 1855.[2]
