On election day, 1 August 1850,Democratic nomineeDavid Settle Reid won the election by a margin of 2,855 votes against his opponent incumbentWhig governorCharles Manly, thereby gaining Democratic control over the office of governor. Reid was sworn in as the 32ndgovernor of North Carolina on 1 January 1851.[2]
