Apresidential election was held inNew York on November 5, 1844, as part of the1844 United States presidential election.[2] Voters chose 36 representatives, or electors to theElectoral College, who voted forPresident andVice President.

New York voted for theDemocratic candidate,James K. Polk, overWhig candidateHenry Clay. Polk won New York by a narrow margin of 1.05%, making the state the second-closest in the country. New York was decisive; if Clay had won the state, he would have won the election with 141 electoral votes.Fulton andCayuga would not vote Democratic again until1964.

Critically,James Birney's vote total of 15,814 votes was more than the 5,106 vote difference between Polk and Clay.
