Swain was elected by theNorth Carolina General Assembly againstDemocratic candidate and former member of theU.S. House of Representatives fromNorth Carolina's 4th districtRichard Dobbs Spaight Jr. and fellowDemocratic candidate and former member of theU.S. House of Representatives fromNorth Carolina's 2nd districtJoseph Hunter Bryan.[1]
On election day, December 1, 1832,Whig nomineeDavid L. Swain was elected by theNorth Carolina General Assembly by a margin of 14 votes against his foremost opponentDemocratic nomineeRichard Dobbs Spaight Jr., thereby gaining Whig control over the office of Governor. Swain was sworn in as the 26thGovernor of North Carolina on December 6, 1832.[2]
