The1831 North Carolina gubernatorial election was held on 12 December 1831 in order to elect thegovernor of North Carolina.IncumbentDemocratic-Republican governorMontfort Stokes was re-elected by theNorth Carolina General Assembly against fellowDemocratic-Republican candidate and former member of theU.S. House of Representatives fromNorth Carolina's 4th districtRichard Dobbs Spaight Jr.in a rematch of the previous election.[1]
On election day, 12 December 1831, incumbentDemocratic-Republican governorMontfort Stokes was re-elected by theNorth Carolina General Assembly by a margin of 15 votes against his opponent fellowDemocratic-Republican candidateRichard Dobbs Spaight Jr., thereby retaining Democratic-Republican control over the office of governor. Stokes was sworn in for his second term on 13 December 1831.[2]
