Levi Woodbury defeatedSamuel Dinsmoor with 56.72% of the vote.

Some 20th Century sources record Woodbury as an Independent Republican. Woodbury stood at the invitation of a convention ofPortsmouth Republicans.[5][6] Contemporary sources record both candidates as Republicans; Dinsmoor as a supporter ofWilliam H. Crawford for theU.S. Presidency, and Woodbury a supporter ofJohn Quincy Adams.[7][8][9] (However, Woodbury would be elected to theU.S. Senate in1825 as aJacksonian)
