Apresidential election was held inTennessee on November 7, 1816 as part of the1816 United States presidential election.[2] TheDemocratic-Republican ticket of theU.S. secretary of stateJames Monroe and thegovernor of New YorkDaniel D. Tompkins was elected unopposed.[3] TheFederalist Party failed to nominate a candidate.[4] In the national election, Monroe easily defeated the seniorU.S. senator fromNew YorkRufus King, who received 34 votes fromunpledged electors despite not being a candidate.[5]
Tennessee chose eight electors from as many single-member electoral districts.[3] Returns from the election have been lost.[6] In several districts, multiple candidates ran pledged to Monroe and Tompkins.[7]

Robert Allen, James Baxter, Samuel Buchanan, David Campbell, Alfred M. Carter, Joseph Hamilton,Adam Huntsman, and Alexander MacClanahan[a] were elected and voted for Monroe and Tompkins.[9] Returns from the district elections have been lost. Carter was elected from the 1st district, apparently without opposition; Huntsman defeated John W. Simpson in the 4th district race; while MacClanahan defeatedEdward Ward in the 6th district.[7] It is not known from which districts the five remaining electors were elected.[10] The district boundaries are taken from Michael J.
