Apresidential election was held inMassachusetts on November 12, 1816 as part of the1816 United States presidential election.[1] The seniorU.S. senator fromNew YorkRufus King, thede facto candidate of theFederalist Party, received 22 votes fromelectors chosen by theMassachusetts General Court.[2] Although commonly remembered as the last Federalist presidential candidate, King was not formally selected as the party's nominee and had no designated running mate; the Massachusetts electors voted for the former U.S. senator fromMarylandJohn Eager Howard for vice president.[3][4] This was the last election in which theDistrict of Maine participated as part of Massachusetts.[5]
