Apresidential election was held inDelaware on November 12, 1816, as part of the1816 United States presidential election.[1] TheunpledgedFederalistelectoral candidates were selected by theDelaware General Assembly over theDemocratic-Republican candidates, who were pledged toJames Monroe.[2] The Federalist Party had failed to nominate a ticket prior to the election.[3] At the meeting of the electoral college, three of the fourDelaware electors voted for the seniorU.S. senator fromNew YorkRufus King forpresident and the junior U.S. senator fromMarylandRobert Goodloe Harper forvice president, while one elector did not vote.[4]
