Democratic-RepublicanSecretary of StateJames Madison won in a landslide victory with 78.6% of the popular vote plus 24 electoral votes, compared to 3.8% ofFederalistMinister to FranceCharles Cotesworth Pinckney and 17.6% ofMinister to the United KingdomJames Monroe, who would become the 5thpresident of the United States in1817.[1]
