Elections were held for the9th United States Congress, in 1804 and 1805. The election took place during theFirst Party System. TheDemocratic-Republican Party continued its control of the presidency and both houses of Congress.

In the presidential election, incumbentDemocratic-Republican PresidentThomas Jefferson easily defeatedFederalist former GovernorCharles Pinckney ofSouth Carolina.[3] As theTwelfth Amendment had been ratified in 1804, this was the first election in which electors separately selected a president and a vice president.

In theHouse, Democratic-Republicans won moderate gains, boosting their already-dominant majority.[4]

In theSenate, Democratic-Republicans made small gains, improving on their commanding majority.[5]
