January 8 –Simon de Montfort, 5th Earl of Leicester, is elected lord ofLanguedoc in a council atMontpellier, after his campaign against theCathar heretics during theAlbigensian Crusade. The Crusaders captureChâteau de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle and enterToulouse; the town pays an indemnity of 30,000 marks and is gifted to Montfort.^[2]

- Louis VIII of France, fulfilling his father's vow tocrusade against the Albigensians, is cautioned by apapal legate not to impede the crusade.^[3]
- AtNarbonne, Louis VIII of France ordered the destruction of the town's fortifications in response to a disagreement betweenSimon de Montfort andArnaud Amalric and forced theviscount of Narbonne Aimery III of Narbonne and other authorities to swear loyalty to Simon.^[3]
