Danielle Balbuena,[3] known professionally as070 Shake (pronounced "oh seven oh shake"),[4] is an American rapper and singer. She is best known for her guest appearance on English singerRaye's 2022 single "Escapism", which peaked at number 22 on theBillboard Hot 100, peaked atop theUK Singles Chart, and won Song of the Year at the2024 Brit Awards.

In 2016, she signed with rapperKanye West's record labelGOOD Music, an imprint ofDef Jam Recordings. Her debut extended play (EP),Glitter (2018), preceded further attention in June of that year for her guest appearances on West's songs "Ghost Town" and "Violent Crimes"—both of which peaked within the top 40 of theBillboard Hot 100 and appear on West's eighth album,Ye. During that same month, Balbuena guest performed on labelmatePusha T's albumDaytona and New York rapperNas' albumNasir. Her debut studio album,Modus Vivendi (2020), and its follow-up,You Can't Kill Me (2022), were both positively received by music critics despite failing to chart.

Aside from her solo career, Balbuena is also a member of the New Jersey–basedmusical collective 070, from which she adapted her stage name. The group has released one mixtape,The 070 Project: Chapter 1 (2016).

Early life and education

[edit]

Balbuena was born inNorth Bergen, New Jersey, and is ofDominican descent. Balbuena attendedNorth Bergen High School, where she played on the school'sbasketball team.[5] Prior to her music career, Balbuena wrote poetry.[6]

Career

[edit]

2015–2016: Early years

[edit]

Shake began her music career in late 2015, recording the songs "Proud" and "Swervin".[6] Shake's stage name is derived from her affiliation with the 070 music collective with 070 coming fromNew Jersey's 070ZIP Codes. By 2018, the 070 crew was noted to have 11 members, including artists and producers.[6]

By 2016, Shake was receiving hundreds of thousands of streams onSoundCloud.[7] Soon after posting several songs on SoundCloud, Shake attracted the attention ofMiami-based promoter and social media personalityYesJulz.[1] After hearing "Proud",YesJulz reached out to Shake onTwitter and signed on to be her manager.[1] Shake had a breakthrough with "Trust Nobody", released early in that year.[3] In August 2016, Shake collaborated with fellow 070 members Ralphy River, Hack, and Treee Safari on the single "Honey".[8][9] The song featured production from frequent collaborators, The Kompetition,[9] a three-person production group.[6] "Honey" simultaneously premiered onComplex and1 AM Radio onDash.[8]Vibe commented that the track "[sounded] tailor-made to rock on dance floors everywhere."[9]

In 2016, Shake signed withKanye West'sGOOD Music label.[6] GOOD Music found out about Shake through Julz, who played some of Shake's music at aYeezy fitting, which caught the attention of the label's president,Pusha T.[1] After signing Shake, the label picked up her "Trust Nobody" track and re-released it in September.[3] Shake spent October and November opening for English rock bandThe 1975 during the American leg of their 2016 tour.[3] On December 8, 2016, 070 released their first mixtape,The 070 Project: Chapter 1.[1][10][11]

2017–present:Glitter,Modus Vivendi,You Can't Kill Me andPetrichor

[edit]

Shake modeled for Gypsy Sport's Fall 2017 runway show.[12] She also went on her first headlining tour in April.[13] In a 2017 interview withPaper, Shake mentioned herYellow Girl EP would release later that year.[14] However, the project was rescheduled to release afterGlitter, another collaboration with The Kompetition.[6]

Her solo debut, the 6-track EPGlitter, was released on March 23, 2018,[15] although it was originally slated for a January release and to include 12 tracks.[6] At the time ofGlitter's release, media outlets noted that her lyrical content concentrated on her self-esteem issues, drug use, and sexuality.[16][15] Shake describedGlitter as "about being in a dark place and finding yourself and figuring it out. It's about being in the lowest of lows type of shit."[6] Shortly prior toGlitter's release, Shake performed at theSXSW music festival.[17]

In May 2018, Shake was featured on "Santeria", a track fromPusha T's albumDaytona.[18]

Shake was a featured vocalist on "Ghost Town" and "Violent Crimes" fromKanye West's albumYe.[19] Michael Saponara praised the two tracks as "standout cuts" on West's album,[20] and ranked "Ghost Town" as the album's best song.[21]HotNewHipHop praised Shake's performance on "Ghost Town" as the highlight of the song and called the track the climax of the album.[22] Shake toldPigeons & Planes that "Ghost Town" was nearly left offYe, as the track was finished on the same day of the album's release.[23] Shake's recording experience with West inWyoming for his albumYe impacted her thoughts aboutYellow Girl; she stated, "I don't know if it's going to be calledYellow Girl. I know the songs are definitely changing. The experience I had in Wyoming makes me want to make music on a different level."[23]

In 2019, she featured onDJ Khaled's albumFather of Asahd alongsideBuju Banton,Sizzla, andMavado on the song "Holy Mountain".

Shake released her debut album,Modus Vivendi, on January 17, 2020.[24] Her second studio album,You Can't Kill Me[25][26] was released in June 2022. Its first single, "Lose My Cool" featuringNLE Choppa, was released on December 3, 2021.[27][28]

In the summer of 2022, Shake accompanied American rapperKid Cudi on hisTo the Moon World Tour as anopening act. In October 2022, Shake was featured on the song "Escapism" byRaye. After going viral onTikTok, the song charted internationally and became Shake's first song to chart on theBillboard Hot 100.[29]

Shake was part of the lineup for the22nd Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April 2023.[30]

Her third studio album,Petrichor[31] was released on November 15, 2024.

Musical style and influences

[edit]

Her musical style has been described aspop, alternative, ambient, andhip-hop.[32] Shake has citedKanye West,Kid Cudi,[23]Michael Jackson,Lauryn Hill,Paramore, andMy Chemical Romance as artists who have inspired her music.[33]

Personal life

[edit]

Shake uses she/her pronouns when describing lovers in her music.[34] A 2017Vogue essay on rising queer stars in rap music mentioned Shake's sexuality and included an Instagram image of her with her then-girlfriend.[12] In a 2018Pitchfork article, Shake said she does not label her sexuality: "I don't really identify myself as queer or gay or anything. I just like girls."[35] She was in a relationship with singerKehlani from 2021 to 2022.[36]

Since January 2023, she has been in a relationship with actress-modelLily-Rose Depp.[37]
