The domain.nato was atop-level domain (TLD) in theDomain Name System (DNS) of theInternet. The domain was added in 1990 by theNetwork Information Center for use byNATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, based on the rationale that none of the then-existingtop-level domains adequately reflected its status as aninternational organization. Soon after this addition, however,Paul Mockapetris, the designer of the DNS, suggested to NATO representatives thatnato.int would be a better choice.[1][2] The TLD.int was created for the use of international organizations, and NATO switched to usingnato.int. Without use, the TLD.nato was removed in July 1996.[citation needed]
